A new series of articles in our 'Ask the Panel' section deals with the role of Altered States of Consciousness in contact experiences.
When investigating contact experiences, it quickly becomes clear that altered states of consciousness are an essential piece of the puzzle.
To begin with, there is the fact that many memories of contact experiences can only be retrieved under hypnosis. Our ability to consciously recall certain encounters seems to be limited, compared to what we can recall when we wade outside of our regular waking state of consciousness, which is characterized by brainwave activity that falls within the 12-30 Hz range, called Beta waves. Memories of contact experiences seem to be more easily accessible in Alpha or Theta states, where the brainwave activity falls within the 7.5-12Hz and 4-7.5HZ ranges, respectively.
But there is more to these altered states of consciousness than merely a better ability to remember. Contactees can often perceive beings and craft that others cannot. There is the phenomenon of astral abductions, where the person seems to bilocate. There are many dream-state encounters. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Research regarding telepathy and remote viewing also shows that these phenomena work better when the subject is in altered states or is familiar with them.
It is well documented that UFOs and beings seem to step in and out of our 3D physical reality at will. This suggests the existence of other realms that they seem to be more familiar with than we are. Esoteric literature refers to them as subtle realms and uses terms like astral and etheric for them. We can’t perceive those realms nor those who dwell in them in our normal beta wave state of consciousness. But we can when in altered states of consciousness.
In short, there is much more to the contact phenomenon than a "nuts and bolts approach only" can address. If we really want to learn about the others, we probably have to first familiarize ourselves with altered states of consciousness.
We therefore asked our panel members for their ideas on the role of altered states of consciousness in contact experiences.

“This can’t be happening! I’m not in an altered state of consciousness, I’m not paralyzed, I’m not out of body, and this is too physical!” Those were my first thoughts when I realized it was an alien being trying to break down my door.
The incident occurred at my studio apartment in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on October 10, 2002 at 4:45 AM. I was sitting on the floor writing an article for my website when through the open window I heard a rustling sound outside in the dark grassy gated courtyard. It sounded like a child dashing across the grass at superhuman speed, mixed with the sound of dried leaves rustling. After hearing it again, my intuition alerted me to something very unfamiliar being out there. It approached and stepped on to the sandy cement patio, dragging its feet and making a shuffling sound as it got closer. I called out a warning for it to identify itself, hoping it was just a neighbor. It didn’t respond.
Then suddenly it pressed up against the frosted glass slatted door and rattled it loudly for a few seconds. The creature was looking in through the gap between the slats, but me sitting on the floor meant I could only see it through the frosted glass. Through the frosted glass I could see the fuzzy impression of a pink-skinned face at doorknob height, and a smaller one of its hand beneath. That’s when I realized it wasn’t a neighbor or even a burglar, but some bipedal pink-skinned humanoid roughly 3-4 feet tall. The creature was 100% physical as evidenced by the door rattling. It continued peering in until I looked away to grab the phone and call my girlfriend to tell her what was happening. After dialing and looking back up, the entity was gone.

The Role of Altered States of Consciousness
During ET Abduction/Contact Experiences
When exploring the ET contact phenomenon, it is important to note that in most abduction/contact scenarios, the perpetrators of these events have by some method altered to varying degrees the emotional responses and perceptual abilities of the experiencer. Unfortunately, I personally believe that some, certainly not all, ET races may not have the best interest of humans in mind when doing so. Adding to that, I also believe that the experiencer’s state of consciousness can sometimes be noticeably influenced by the person themselves.
Extraterrestrial Altered States
First, let us consider the altered states imposed on a human by certain extraterrestrials. In this case, simply for the ease in handling a human, ET’s generally subdue the will of the experiencer and inhibit that person’s ability to fully focus and comprehend what is actually happening to them. This cerebral disruption will first and foremost be imposed for the ET’s benefit, in order to control the event and fulfill the alien agenda more quickly, easily and without conflict. As noted above, I also believe there are
certain races that promote such clandestine contacts through altered states in order to conceal the ET’s agenda.

It is difficult to discuss the phenomena of contact and abduction because the entities often appear to pull experiencers into an alternate state of consciousness that is challenging enough to experience, let alone try to describe (and often defend) to others. We have to open our aperture to what’s possible to begin to even start to sort things out.
An oversimplification of this alternate consciousness is a mixture of surreal sensations and heightened sense of connection to the universe. How is this state achieved and why does it occur?
For starters, I believe that the natural form of at least some of the visiting beings isn’t physical as we know it. Although they can appear physical if they choose, my speculation is that their native existence is a form of pure consciousness.
While not known how old visiting civilizations are, one can likely liberally speculate on their technological advancements. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to guess that, if there’s a way to plug consciousness in and out of body, that a society that has mastered long-distance space-travel may be able to also perform other technologic wonders such as this. Not only can they do this to themselves, but to experiencers as well.
For them, when operating in a material form, the bodies they use are more like puppets. They operate within corporeal forms in the short-term if they need to physically interact with individuals or the solid environment. Afterwards, they put these bodies back into storage until needed again.
The value to this for them is that they don’t need to fly a craft here with a full crew to visit or take experiencers for those missions of purely intellectual interaction, additionally having to worry about the logistics of doing so in a stealthy manner. They come in a form of consciousness and pull experiencers into the energetic realm with them.

“Forbidden Questions: A Therapist Talks About Human-ET Contact”
by Gwen Farrell, CHt, RT, 2017, Trafford Publishing.
Q: How can I communicate with ETs?
This question is arising more and more frequently from scientists, researchers and investigators who are convinced of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial beings and who want to take the next step of communicating with them. Interestingly, even some experiencers who have had contact for years are asking how they can initiate contract, rather than having to wait for ETs to come knocking on their bedroom doors at night. And yet, despite the growing interest in the subject, this may still be the most controversial of all the forbidden questions.
Why communicate with ETs?
Regardless of the many positive human-ET contact experiences that we hear about, negative contact events are also still being reported, and the human-ET contact phenomenon remains a risky business with no guaranteed safe harbor in sight. So, why would any intelligent, level-headed human being want to risk initiating contact with beings who seem capable of inflicting so much pain and unhappiness? If you asks scientists, investigators and explorers in any field why they step outside their warm, safe laboratories and libraries and venture out into the vast, mysterious unknown, they will tell you they do it to challenge themselves, to satisfy their curiosity and to expand the scope of human knowledge. Likewise, if you ask Ufologists and contact researchers why they want to meet and talk to ETs, you’ll get similar answers. Boundless curiosity and a quest for knowledge are hallmarks of humanity, regardless of the field of endeavor.
Skeptics and non-believers can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would want to waste their time trying to communicate with beings who they believe (a) don’t exist, (b) who, if they do exist, don’t possess the technology to communicate with us, and (c) who, if they do exist and do possess the technology to communicate with us, will almost certainly be interested solely in conquering or destroying us. The great scientists of our day have come out and said as much. In their view, the smart money is on keeping our mouths shut and maintaining a low profile so as not to attract the attention of the more powerful, perhaps hostile, residents of the Universe. And they’re not the only members of the human race who aren’t eager to reach out and touch ET. Many experiencers who have suffered through negative, traumatic contact with alien beings can’t comprehend why anyone would willingly open themselves up to such experiences.

I am Pauli Liikala, author of the book “Viidennen Asteen Yhteyksiä” (Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind)
During 2016, I interviewed 41 Finns who had experiences with UFOs and/or humanoids. I sent each one of them a questionnaire about their encounters with UFOs and humanoids. Some of them answered via Facebook or email and some of them I interviewed in person. I arranged the answers I had received using J. Allen Hynek's scale of UFO classification. Hynek separated the encounters into two main categories, which are distant encounters and close encounters. Hynek divided the close encounters into three different subcategories which are now referred as encounters of the first, the second, and the third kind. Later, encounters of the fourth and fifth kind were included.
In my book there are forty-one stories, of which nine are of encounters of the second or third kind, twenty-one of the fourth kind, and eleven are of the fifth kind. Thirteen of those stories are told using the person's real name and twenty-eight are told through an alias. Of the people involved, twenty-nine are female and twelve are male.
I have picked the story of one of these experiences for this article, which is the story of Tanja Puhakka.
The story of Tanja Puhakka.
As a child I had frequently terrible “dreams” of being kidnapped and taken somewhere where I lay down on an operating table under a bright light and was forced to undergo the most horrible and painful experiments and operations. I tried to fight back and demanded these “doctors” to stop, but it never worked. I was completely powerless and paralyzed, and I couldn't move or anything. These beings were always humans, robed in doctor clothing. That is why I wondered and kept asking why are you doing this to me? Doctors were supposed to help people after all.

The field of ufology has completed a historical phase where UFOs have finally been accepted by all of the aeronautical agencies of the world as a real and unexplainable phenomenon. When we say UFO, it refers to something - an object - that flies, and that is unidentified. In no case, at least up to this point, can we assume it’s an extraterrestrial craft.
The "extraterrestrial craft", as a concept, arises from certain testimonies, with few reliable records, which claim a "technological appearance." This is why this type of UFO could be called a technoform UFO. It is this UFO that captures the interest of researchers, scholars and adepts in ufology. This technoform UFO transports us to a fantastic kingdom, to a subject unfortunately lampooned by authors and story tellers alike. The technoform UFO brings us to encounters with aliens, meaning, as the true meaning of the word indicates, a being-other, an 'alius', simply, an "Other."
Once we establish that UFOs are in fact spaceships with extraterrestrial origins, we can then begin to speculate. One question we can ask is, "since when did these visitations occur?" It is a question that points to history. Another question we can ask is, "where do they come from?"
All in all, the issue that most deeply concerns us is, "what does this otherness want?" For us humans, everything happens for a reason. This premise forces us to assume that this otherness has an intelligent plan. Assuming they’re self-conscious beings, we need to ask ourselves why they’re being elusive, "what is the purpose?" So far, any questions with regards to alien intention falls under the field of exopolitics, with its prefix of ‘exo-’ that indicates that it is external; from outside. Exopolitics is the art or science of government as concerned with creating or influencing policy toward extraterrestrial phenomena and extraterrestrial beings.
It happens that these exopolitics —not understood here as a social movement due to governmental disclosure— has lost sight of the fact that if there is an intention, say, observing our culture, then there is an "inter-political" implication. This is confirmed by the fact that such an implication has manifested itself in countless events related to interactions between human being and this otherness. In the form of “gods, civilizing heroes or Kulturbringern, angels and demons”, the otherness has come into contact with Humans centuries and millennia ago. It is not exopolitics but politics which brings together different forms of self-consciousness in the universe. So, let us call it Cosmopolitics.
